The Kangal Dog is the National Dog of Turkey.

"Beyond Kayadibi the country dogs were the largest
and most savage of any I had met. In build they were
like
Newfoundlands, but larger, with black head or
muzzle, yellow body, and long curling tail. From nearly
every flock that fed within a half-mile of the road a
dog would presently detach itself and come lumbering
across country to the attack.”

(Childs, W.J., Across Asia Minor on Foot , London, 1917)

The Kangal Dog (or Karabash- Black Face) as it is also
known, has a century long history as a working dog in the
Sivas Kangal region of central Turkey.

Is is mainly used as a sheep and goat-guardian against
predators such as the wolf.

The shepherds here also keep this strong, large and
mastiff type dog strictly as a working animal to guard the
livestock on these vast, open plains on the Anatolian
plateau.

But in other parts of the world it is more and more finding
its place as a guardian for house, farm and family.
The Kangal Dog has it's image on Stamps:
