RANCHO BORREGO C&J's KAPIF
KAPIF Kangal - as we call him for short, joined our family in
June of 2007 at the tender age of 10 weeks; hailing from
Southern California.

"Little boy in a big body" as we sometimes call him is just that.
At 8 months he weight in at 110# and stood 30" tall at the
shoulder. - And still a Kangal puppy who has no idea what he
can get into- or does he...?

The first picture of him..
Just arrived in Denver and already a bundle of joy...
... but also soo tired...
.. and this is his Kangal trademark- "The Cinnebun Tail"
Kapif's first Show - and Wins - at the tender age of seven months:

4 First Place, 4 Best Male and 4 Best of Breed
Everybody wants to kiss him... - my daughters friend thinks he's just
the greatest dog but he will grow up to be a guardian...

KANGAL Dogs on
Guard Duty
When a KANGAL Dog is on guard duty on a mountain side in
his homeland of Turkey , it will pick a high laying viewpoint
overlooking his charges and just listen and watch.
When it gets hot in the middle of the day  KANGAL dogs will
dig hollows and lay in them to keep cool.
When approaching, many unaware strangers find them self taken
by surprise, when a barking dog suddenly hauls itself from the
ground.

Young and unexperienced KANGAL dogs are send out to work
with older, experienced dogs to learn their duties. This way
they also learn about their ranks within the working dog group.
As the young dogs follow the older more experienced dogs
around, the older dog will train the new ones.

KANGAL dogs are frequently on duty in pairs - they will split
work shifts and rest times.

During the daytime KANGAL dogs will not spend a lot of
energy in circling around the herd, but at night it is quite a
different story. They will actively patrol the perimeters of the
flock and their presence is made known by deep, far carrying
barks.

When the KANGAL dog first becomes aware of a possible
thread it will sound a short, quiet "Roff" just to get the attention
of the sheep, after that it will alert the other dogs and the
shepherd with a sharp bark. At that signal the sheep, which trust
their guard dogs, will gather around their protectors.

The KANGAL dog will position itself between the sheep and
whatever they deem a danger and move in a back and forth
pattern.

Even our KANGAL
dogs, which have no history as working
dogs, will stand between the family and perceived threads and
will try to push us back and away. Then they will give a bark
that sounds like a roar and is a clear warning to everybody who
would mean harm to us.
